MASTERCLASS with potter, Jin Eui Kim

Jin Eui Kim is an internationally renowned, multi award winning ceramic artist. Originally from South Korea he now lives with his family in Cardiff. Jin will be giving a masterclass into his practise on Sunday November 5th. Hosted in the historic Council Chamber in City Hall, the masterclass is a complimentary event, included in your ticket to Made by Hand.

Whilst at Cardiff School of Art & Design, Jin Eui studied the illusory effects of the application of tonal bands to three-dimensional surfaces. His monochrome palette is punctuated with flashes of intense colour, creating riveting pieces of ceramics that are immaculately made. Jin graduated with a MA and PhD in Ceramics. He was then accepted into Graduate Residence at Fireworks Clay Studios, Cardiff and remains a full-time member. Jin is also a member of Contemporary Applied Art (CAA) and the Craft Potters Association (CPA).

5 Favourites chosen by Hywel Pontin of Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre

Starting our popular 5 Favourites, we asked a number of curators, journalists and influencers to choose their 5 Favourites from Made by Hand, Cardiff. We asked Hywel Pontin, director of Llantarnam Arts Centre, Cwmbran. Hywel is a selector for Made by Hand and Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre has been collaborating with Made by Hand since we began.
Here are Hywel's choices:

Ray Reynolds – Textiles Ray captures a painterly quality to the work that I love. The mark making is expressive and gestural and looks like it has a spontaneity that defines its method of work.

Jodie Hook – Jewellery The balance between the weight of metal and stones, the lines she creates with the metal are beautiful.

Tibor Eperjessy – Leather This work looks lovely, is wonderfully tactile and elevates even the most humblest of objects into something magical.

Christian Ryan – Glass Christian understands colour in glass that makes the heart sing. I love his drawing, something so simple can be so moving.

Abigail Leach – Ceramics For me even the most functional of objects must have something else. I like the way Abigail’s work takes me back to an earlier time with references to the early mid 20th Century
