 11-1pm Free Stitch Embroidery with Suzi Park MS2 

Suzi Park aka Suzi Stitch is the founder of Make it in Wales. She will be teaching free-stitch embroidery with added appliqué techniques using a sewing machine. 11-1pm Felt Christmas Brooches & Decorations with Lisa Barry MS1


Make a felt brooch or Christmas decoration on a theme of your choice, ideas, felt and trims will be provided.

2pm-4pm Make A Silver Ring with Maggie Cross MS2

Maggie Cross is a jewellery design graduate from Birmingham University and uses casting techniques to make her jewellery. Have fun making something special with a personal touch. In the two hours with Maggie you’ll carve a unique, one of a kind ring using jewellers wax and a selection of tools. Your bespoke wax ring will then be sent to a casting company in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter who will cast the wax into solid silver using the process of lost wax casting. The rings are then hand-finished and posted back to you. The workshop includes all materials and postage of your finished ring, but does not include entry in to Made by Hand, please book an entrance ticket.

2pm-4pm Introduction to Needlefelting with Lisa Barry MS1

Needle felting is used to create three dimensional shapes. This is done through the use of the barbed needles which felt the wool or matt the fibres together. The workshop includes all materials, but does not include entry in to Made by Hand, please book an entrance ticket.

Saturday November 4th

10.30am-4pm Janet Bolton Embroidered Textiles Workshop.

Janet Bolton teaches and exhibits her textile art all over the world. We are delighted to offer an all day workshop with this inspirational and high influential maker at Made by Hand. 

The main emphasis of this workshop is to encourage participants to develop their own ideas, with suitable suggestions and help from the very beginning. No need to have a set idea in mind but do come with a simple idea if you would like to. Working directly with the fabric Janet will explain and demonstrate the simple cutting and sewing techniques required, and describe the excitement of letting the idea change and develop right down to the very last stitch.

Janet will demonstrate the importance of presenting and framing the work in a way sympathetic to the composition as part of a group appraisal. Some but not all materialswill be provided and the price includes entry into Made by Hand.

11-1pm Making Memory Wire Bracelets with Lois Standish Williams MS1 

Choose your beads and colour schemes and experiment with threading patterns to create simple but effective jewellery.  The workshop includes all materials, but does not include entry in to Made by Hand, please book an entrance ticket.

11-1pm Screen Print your own greetings cards with Emily Skinner MS2

Emily Skinner is a mixed media textile designer, researcher and lecturer based in Pembrokeshire. She uses traditional hand silk screen printing techniques as well as laser cutting and interactive technologies. Emily will share her printing practice with you to produce 5 hand screen-printed cards chosen from a selection of laser cut designs. Working in pairs, each pair will produce 6 cards with two colours. You will learn about colour separation and registration (line the design up for the next print and the next colour). A Make it in Wales workshop. 2pm-4pm Needlefelt a brooch with Ruth Packham MS2

Ruth is an artist/maker/felter and uses British wool fibre to make her quirky creations. She works from her coastal studio in Borth. Her background is fine art, installation, video and printmaking but she’s now a full-time felt maker, mesmerised by wool as a material. Wool is a wonder as it can be wet and shrunk, used as a drawing material, moulded and sculpted. Discover the magic of needle felting and make your own cat brooch. Needle felting is a simple, accessible technique whereby using a barbed needle to stab into the wool fibre it is possible to sculpt the wool. Ruth has been needle felting for many years and will guide you through the process of creating a cat hepraisal.ad brooch, using her own design as a guide. 11-1pm Inspirational Pottery with Barry Akins MS1   

Love the Pottery Throwdown? Here is a great introduction to the craft of pottery. In the session you will be able to learn many 'tricks of the pottery trade' including various pot making and simple yet stunning ceramic animal making techniques and also learn the basics of throwing on the potter’s wheel. 11am-1pm Paper Cutting with Erica Frances George MS2 

Erica is based in Brynberian, Pembrokeshire. She’s been playing with sharp knives for a decade and has honed her skills to produce staggeringly intricate paper-cut designs. Her designs have been used on teeshirts, branding campaigns and even tattoos. Erica will have different design templates for you to use, which you will learn to cut and take away. She will show you some surprising applications-from stenciling, to block printing.  The workshop includes all materials, but does not include entry in to Made by Hand, please book an entrance ticket.

1.30pm-3.30pm Home Mosaic Projects with Barry Akins MS1  

Learn the ancient art of making mosaics. The session will provide all the materials you need to create a stunning mosaic and enable you to be able to produce mosaics at home with the information provided by this session. Suitable for beginners or advanced bring a simple image you may like to make into a mosaic.  The workshop includes all materials, but does not include entry in to Made by Hand, please book an entrance ticket.

1.30pm-3.30pm Make Mini Books in a Box with Carole King MS2

Carole is a bookbinder. From her rural stone barn studio she works through a wide variety of media including painting, printmaking and bookbinding. Her artists’ books include tunnel books, Coptic-bound and case-bound hardbacks. On this workshop, you’ll make some adorable mini books in a box with Carole. Learn a variety of simple bookbinding techniques which you’ll be able to up-scale and re-use again and again. For the covers of the books you’ll be able to choose from a variety of Carole’s own designs and hand screen-printed papers. Every Day - Children's Drop In Workshops with Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre & Kings Monkton School

 Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre will be running drop in workshops, every day. Young visitors can enjoy the Free drop in workshops and take away their creations as a memento of their visit to Cardiff.

11am Masterclass with potter, Jin Eui Kim

Jin Eui Kim is an internationally renowned ceramic artist. Originally from South Korea, he now lives with his family in Cardiff, UK.

Whilst at Cardiff School of Art & Design Jin Eui studied the illusory effects of the application of tonal bands to three-dimensional surfaces. He graduated with a MA and PhD in Ceramics. He was then accepted into Graduate Residence at Fireworks Clay Studios, Cardiff and remains a full time member. He is also a member of Contemporary Applied Art (CAA) and the Craft Potters Association (CPA). 

We are honoured that he is giving a masterclass at Made by Hand. 

This Masterclass is a complimentary event, which is held in the Council Chamber, City Hall. You must purchase a ticket to the event to gain entry.

Sunday November 5th 

 11am Talk with textile artist Janet Bolton

Janet Bolton is one of the UK's most respected living textile artists. She has exhibited her textiles worldwide and runs workshops across the globe. Her work can be found in public and private collections and numerous books have been published about her work. 

We are delighted that she will be giving a talk and running a workshop at Made by Hand. Her workshop is on Saturday,  please CLICK HERE for details.

Janet will be giving an illustrated talk about her life in textiles, her inspirations and techniques.

Janet Bolton composes textile pictures using the simplest of hand sewing techniques. Her inspiration comes from visual experience, memory, imagination – and sometimes from some quality inspired by the material itself - the placement of each element within the composition and the feeling this evokes being the important factor of each piece of work.

 

This Talk is a complimentary event, which is held in the Council Chamber, City Hall during Made by Hand. You must purchase a ticket to the event to gain entry.
